In private practice as a general surgeon for more than a decade, Dr. Jamie Terry is well known inside Houston medical circles and in the community at large. An Ohio native, Dr. Terry has been active in Houston since 1989 and is board certified in general surgery.

In 1995, she opened a general surgery practice with a special focus on breast cancer education, prevention and treatment. In 2010, she joined Texas Breast Specialists.

Background / Education:

Dr. Terry graduated with Honors from Stanford University in 1984. She moved to Houston from Chicago in 1989 after graduating medical school at Northwestern University. Since then, she has established herself as a leader in our medical community.

In 1994, Dr. Terry became the first African-American woman, and only the third female, to graduate from the general surgery training program at St. Joseph Hospital. She has received specialized training in image-guided breast biopsies, laparascopic surgery and advanced trauma life support.

Dr. Terry served on the board of trustees of the Houston Chapter of the American Cancer Society and as a medical advisor for Sisters Network, a national breast cancer survivor’s support group. Dr. Terry’s commitment to community service begins with her patients. She is an advocate for breast cancer awareness and has spoken to countless audiences on the subject.

Dr. Terry has received numerous honors including the Physician 5-star Award for Outstanding Achievement by US Family Health Plan; the Breast Health & Awareness Committee Award for Outstanding Service from the American Cancer Society; and was nominated one of Houston’s Top Docs in 2004. She also serves as a radio and television commentator on breast cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Dr. Terry appeared on “Ask the Doctor” every Tuesday on Fox 26 Morning News in 2005, to answer community health concerns. “Ask the Doctor” was Houston’s only live, viewer-driven physician report.
