3D Mammography Arrives in Amarillo

March 01, 2015

AMARILLO, Texas  — New 3D mammography offered at Texas Breast Specialists–Amarillo, a first for Amarillo, may save more lives by diagnosing breast cancer at earlier, more treatable stages. 3D imaging is a powerful tool in the fight against breast cancer, which will claim the lives of more than 3,000 Texans this year

“These sharper and clearer images give radiologists a more accurate screening tool for breast cancer detection,” said Lova Arenivas, M.D., at Texas Breast Specialists–Amarillo. “This type of mammography results in fewer call backs and more revealing screenings for patients, alleviating much waiting and worry, especially for women with dense breast tissue or cystic breasts who are often called back for additional screening.”

3D mammography, called breast tomosynthesis, has been shown to improve detection of invasive cancers by 40 percent over conventional 2D mammography. “Prior to this installation, women would have had to travel to other cities to take advantage of this advanced technology,” said Dr. Arenivas.  “We’re bringing leading-edge healthcare to the people of Amarillo.”

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among women, exceeded only by lung cancer. One in eight women will develop breast cancer sometime in her lifetime. Early detection is the key to survival.
