An ultrasound-guided breast biopsy uses sound waves to help locate a lump or abnormality and remove a tissue sample for examination. It is safe, less invasive than surgery, and leaves little to no scarring.
An ultrasound is a radiology test that uses sound waves to create pictures of internal organs. The doctor uses the ultrasound to locate the abnormality and then conducts either a cyst aspiration or core needle biopsy to remove tissue samples.
It is performed under local anesthesia in an outpatient setting. The entire procedure should take about 30 minutes.
